As his secret-keeper, Celeste heard all the juicy details gossip blogs would have killed or overpaid for. The affair came up again while Manuel was rerecording a couple of verses from a new song. His team thought the lyrics were too sensitive. “I don’t care if it’s supposed to be a song about Celeste,” his manager said. “It’s wimpy shit. Where’s the sex? Where’s the fire?”

“Let’s take five,” the audio engineer said. Manuel pulled away from the microphone and into the control room. Celeste was mindlessly scrolling on her phone.

“I need advice,” Manuel said. For most people she put on an undecipherable mask, but with him her eyebrows scrunched together as she processed every word. She was an exceptional listener—which was likely what made her such an excellent musician. A good ear in the world made for a good ear in the studio.

“Robert wants to go out. In public,” Manuel said.

“Want my honest opinion?” Celeste said. “You can’t be invisible. You could try a restaurant a bit farther out from the city. But even then I don’t think it’d guarantee you wouldn’t be seen.”

“He’s insistent. He wants to go out together. A normal date, he said.”

“Weigh the risks,” Celeste said.

“Chikibaby,” he said. “Of course.”

His reassurance, though, must not have been enough. She texted an hour later.
